Welcome to the web pages of Sue Allan, author of the popular New World Trilogy that began in 2005 with the publication of the best selling novel 'The Mayflower Maid' which was quickly followed by four other historical novels.
As well as writing historical fiction, Sue has become something of an oracle when it comes to the subject of the English Separatists – many of whom later became better known as Mayflower Pilgrims. She has written five books related to the subject; ‘In Search of Scrooby Manor’, ‘James Brewster, Bawtry Chapel and a Trybe of Wicked People’, ‘William Brewster- The Making of a Pilgrim’, ‘Steps Along the Mayflower Trail, and her latest book ‘In Search of Mayflower Pilgrim Susanna White-Winslow’. Sue also wrote and researched the current guide books for Gainsborough Old Hall in Lincolnshire.
She has helped and advised on numerous projects relating to the subject including several documentaries about the Mayflower Pilgrims including ‘Who Do You Think You Are USA’, ‘Monumental’ , BBC ‘Coast’, Steeple Chase Films/PBS/BBC ‘Pilgrims’, and the as yet unreleased ‘Pilgrim Home’ by independent film-maker Jane Williams. Beside television and film, Sue as contributed to numerous radio shows over the years both here and in the USA. In 2014, Sue was honoured as the SMPDA Scholar of the Year in Lancaster Pennsylvania where her lecture on Scrooby Manor was filmed and televised by C-Span. She has also contributed numerous published articles, including for the ‘Mayflower Quarterly’, ‘American Magazine’ and ‘Lincolnshire Life’, as well as being featured herself in a number of magazines, including ‘The Smithsonian’, ‘Newsmax’ and ‘Who Do You Think You Are’ .
Her ground-breaking research, in association with colleagues, American Mayflower Historian, Caleb Johnson, and Dr Simon Neal, identified the previously unknown geological roots of three Mayflower Pilgrims, Dorothy May-Bradford, William White and Susanna Jackson-White-Winslow, in 2017 which was featured in three consecutive edition of the prestigious publication ‘The American Genealogist’. That same year, Sue had published genealogical research confirming that Separatist and Plymouth Colony member, Edward Southworth, hailed from Clarborough in Nottinghamshire.
In November 2012 Sue was appointed as Official Historian at Scrooby Manor and in 2014 she became the Chairman of the Pilgrim Fathers UK Origins Association, having already previously served as its Historian for a number of years.
Sue also runs the popular ‘Mayflower Pilgrim Tours’ (with exclusive rights of access to the grounds of Scrooby Manor) guiding visitors around the Mayflower Trail, spanning the Pilgrim sites in the three counties of South Yorkshire, Bassetlaw in Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire, as she brings their story alive in her very own special way. For this she was awarded the prestigious Nottinghamshire STARS 2013 Award for Excellence in Customer Service.
She is also available to present lively lectures on both the Pilgrim Fathers and related subjects.
